Day-by-day timeline for a Tampa shower remodel — from demo to first hot rinse. What slows the job down and how to plan around it.

Almost every shower remodel client in Tampa asks the same first question: how long am I going to be showering at the gym? Honest answer: 5 to 10 working days for a standard tub-to-shower conversion or tile shower rebuild, plus another couple of days if you want frameless glass. Here's the day-by-day breakdown from a crew that does these monthly across Tampa, Brandon, and Clearwater.

Day 1 — Demo and protection

We sheet off the bathroom door, run plastic down the hall to the front door, and demo the old shower or tub down to the studs. Old tile, backer board, fixtures, and pan all go to the dumpster. End of day 1 you're looking at framing and the slab. This is the day clients dread and it's actually the most fun.

Day 2 — Plumbing rough-in and inspection

Plumber swaps the valve, sets new drain location if needed, and we get inspected if the city requires it (Tampa, St. Pete, Pinellas all do for valve changes). Inspection is what most delays come down to — we book it Day 1 so it's ready Day 2.

Day 3 — Pan and waterproofing

Pre-slope, liner or membrane (we use a hot-mopped pan or a Schluter Kerdi system depending on the layout), curb, and a 24-hour cure. This is the day you absolutely do not rush. Florida shower failures almost always trace back to a sloppy pan.

Day 4 — Backer board and waterproof walls

Cement board up, seams taped, joints redgarded or membrane-wrapped. Niche framed in. We do a flood test if the city requires.

Days 5–7 — Tile install

Walls first, then floor. Large-format tile (the 2026 trend) goes faster than mosaic; herringbone and complex patterns go slower. A standard 60x36 walk-in with subway walls and 2x2 mosaic floor is two days. Marble-look 12x24 on the walls and 12x24 on the floor is closer to three days.

Day 8 — Grout, caulk, and trim

Grout cure, silicone caulk in corners and at the floor, shower fixtures installed and pressure-tested. At this point your shower is usable for the first time.

Days 9–10 — Glass (if frameless)

Glass is the wild card. Frameless glass shops in Tampa Bay run 7–10 business days from measure to install. We measure on Day 8, the glass shop fabricates, and they install on Day 9 or 10. Sliding doors and curtain rod setups skip this step entirely.

What makes it take longer

  • Custom shower niches with accent tile (add a half-day)
  • Cast iron drain replacement on older South Tampa homes
  • Permit/inspection backups in unincorporated Hillsborough
  • Materials backorder — order tile and fixtures 2 weeks before demo
  • Discovering rotted framing during demo (common in pre-1980 homes)

What makes it faster

  • Keeping the existing valve location and drain placement
  • Choosing in-stock 12x24 large-format wall tile
  • Sliding glass door instead of custom frameless
  • All materials on site Day 1 — we order before scheduling demo

Frequently asked questions

How long does a shower remodel take in Tampa?
A typical Tampa shower remodel runs 5–8 working days for tile and plumbing, plus another 7–10 business days lead time for frameless glass if you want it. Most clients are showering at home again by the end of the second week.
Can I use the rest of my bathroom during the remodel?
Yes. We seal off the work area but the toilet and vanity stay usable in most layouts. We give you plastic-sealed walkways and clean the bathroom daily.
Do I need a permit for a shower remodel in Tampa?
Yes if you're moving the drain, replacing the valve, or doing structural work — which covers almost every real remodel. Cosmetic tile replacement over an existing pan generally does not. We handle the permit and inspections for you.
How much does a Tampa shower remodel cost in 2026?
Tile shower rebuilds run $7,500–$15,000 depending on tile, fixtures, and size. Add $1,200–$2,500 for frameless glass. We give detailed line-item written quotes — no surprise change orders.
