A Riverhills homeowner upgraded 8 standard switches to Kasa smart switches — installed, app-configured and schedule-programmed in a single visit.
The Challenge
The homeowner wanted smart switches for lighting automation but was concerned about compatibility with their 1960s wiring — older homes sometimes lack neutral wires at switch boxes, which standard smart switches require.
Our Solution
We assessed the wiring at each box — 6 locations had a neutral present; 2 did not. For the 2 locations without neutral, we installed Kasa EP25 smart plugs on the lamp circuits instead of in-wall switches. All 8 locations were programmed with morning-on and sunset-off schedules in the Kasa app.
The Result
The homeowner has full app control and automated schedules on all main lighting. We explained the neutral-wire limitation transparently and provided a workaround that achieved the desired result without rewiring.
Work Completed
- Assess neutral availability at 8 switch locations
- Install 6 Kasa KS205 smart switches (neutral present locations)
- Install 2 Kasa EP25 smart plugs (no-neutral workaround)
- Create home on Kasa app — all devices named
- Program daily schedules: sunrise-on, sunset-off
Questions About This Project
Do smart switches work in older Temple Terrace homes without neutral wires?
Some smart switches (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart without neutral) work without a neutral. Alternatively, a smart plug on the lamp cord is a code-legal workaround for lamp circuits. We assess each box and advise honestly.
