A South Fork homeowner updated their 2007 kitchen with new quartz countertops, a herringbone tile backsplash, and under-cabinet lighting — no cabinet changes.
The Challenge
The 2007 South Fork kitchen had original laminate countertops that were peeling at the seams and a painted backsplash that had gone out of style. The cabinets were in good condition and the homeowner wanted a targeted update without a full renovation.
Our Solution
We removed the laminate countertops and installed new icy-white quartz. We tiled the backsplash in a white 2×4 glass herringbone pattern from counter to cabinets. We added LED strip lighting under the cabinets connected to a dimmer switch.
The Result
The kitchen reads as completely updated. The quartz and herringbone combination photographs beautifully. Cost: $4,800 in materials and labor — a fraction of what new cabinets would have run.
Work Completed
- Remove laminate countertops
- Install icy-white quartz — template and install
- White 2×4 glass herringbone tile backsplash
- Grout — white sanded, sealed
- LED strip under-cabinet lighting on dimmer
- New backsplash outlet covers to match tile

What is the fastest kitchen update with the most visual impact?
Countertop replacement (1 day) and backsplash tile (1–2 days) together. The combination has more visual impact than any single update and costs a fraction of a full kitchen remodel.
