A Heritage Isles homeowner had a new 3/4 HP InSinkErator Badger installed under their kitchen sink — replacing a seized original unit.
The Challenge
The original disposal had seized after grinding fruit rinds. The homeowner had tried the reset button and the hex wrench with no success — the motor was burned out. They had already purchased an InSinkErator Badger 5 from the hardware store.
Our Solution
We shut off power at the circuit breaker, removed the old unit from the mounting ring (it was a direct-wire unit), installed the new Badger 5 on the same mounting ring (same manufacturer, same ring), connected the wiring and tested the dishwasher knockout removal. Total time: 45 minutes.
The Result
Disposal working perfectly. The homeowner was impressed that the job took under an hour.
Work Completed
- Shut off power at circuit breaker — lock out/tag out
- Remove old InSinkErator from mounting ring
- Install new Badger 5 on existing mounting ring
- Connect direct-wire electrical — wire nuts and tape
- Remove dishwasher drain knockout
- Restore power — test run and listen for binding
Questions About This Project
Can I use the same mounting ring when replacing a garbage disposal?
Usually yes if you're replacing with the same brand (InSinkErator, Moen, Waste King all use different mount systems). Switching brands typically requires a new mounting assembly — adds about 15 minutes.
