A South Fork homeowner added a new ceiling fan to a bonus room that only had a recessed light — new fan-rated brace box installed, no attic access required.
The Challenge
The bonus room above the garage had a single recessed light but the homeowner wanted a ceiling fan. The room gets hot in summer and has no direct HVAC register — a large fan would significantly help.
Our Solution
We removed the recessed can, installed an expandable ceiling fan brace kit through the existing 6" hole (no need to cut a larger hole or access the attic), and mounted a pancake fan box on the brace. We wired in a remote receiver to allow fan/light-kit control on the existing single switch, and installed a 60" fan with a long-range remote.
The Result
The bonus room is now comfortable in summer. The install took 75 minutes total and required no attic access and no new drywall work.
Work Completed
- Remove existing 6" recessed can
- Install expandable brace kit through existing hole — no attic
- Mount pancake fan box on brace
- Wire remote receiver for fan/light independent control
- Install 60" fan with 12" downrod (10 ft ceiling height)
- Pair and test remote — all speeds and light modes working
