Before an interior painter arrives at your Tampa home, agree on exactly what will be painted and who will prepare each room. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and closets are separate parts of the job. A clear plan helps avoid surprises whether you want a single bedroom refreshed or an entire house repainted.

Start with a room-by-room scope

Walk through each room and write down the surfaces you want included. For example, a bedroom request could specify walls and baseboards, with the ceiling, closet, and doors excluded. In a hallway, identify whether the trim around each doorway belongs in the quote. This is more useful than simply requesting a price to paint a three-bedroom house.

  • List the rooms and approximate dimensions, including ceiling height.
  • Mark which walls, ceilings, baseboards, doors, and closets need paint.
  • Identify areas that will stay their existing color.
  • Photograph cracks, stains, nail holes, and previous patches before furniture hides them.

Choose colors before the work is scheduled

Review your color choices in the room during daylight and with your evening lighting. Compare them beside flooring, cabinets, and furniture that will remain. Give your painter the exact color name, code, and intended finish for each surface. A photo of a color on a phone is useful inspiration, but it should not be the final specification.

Ask whether sample application, primer, and major color changes are included in the proposal. If you have leftover paint for a room that needs partial work, photograph the label and tell the painter its age and storage history. Do not assume an old can will produce an invisible match.

Agree on furniture and wall preparation

Remove small belongings, fragile decorations, and items from shelves before the appointment. Discuss heavy furniture separately: who moves it, where it can go, and whether moving it changes the price. Leave wall-mounted televisions, large mirrors, and complicated curtain hardware for a specific discussion instead of assuming removal and reinstallation are included.

Tell the painter which nail holes should be filled and which hanging positions you want to reuse. Flag water stains or recurring damage so the cause can be assessed before cosmetic work begins. The estimate should distinguish routine surface preparation from larger drywall repairs.

Plan how you will use the house

For an occupied home, choose a starting room and a place to keep belongings while that space is unavailable. Discuss access to bathrooms, bedrooms, and your work-from-home area. Arrange a separate space for pets and children. Follow the selected paint manufacturer's ventilation, drying, and return-to-use guidance rather than assuming every room can be used immediately.

For whole-house painting, confirm whether the work will happen in stages and when furniture can move back. Ask who handles daily cleanup and how the final walk-through will work. These details belong in the project plan alongside the color selections.

What to send for your estimate

Send wide photos of every room, close-ups of damaged areas, approximate dimensions, and your list of included surfaces. Mention furniture that cannot move and any deadline tied to a move or delivery. Photos help establish the scope; an on-site visit may still be needed to confirm preparation and access.
